Woman dead in 'domestic violence targeted attack' at nursing home

A woman was shot dead and a suspect remains on the loose Friday after a “domestic violence targeted attack” outside a veterans nursing home in Georgia, officials said.

Authorities initially treated the situation at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home in Augusta — reported after 11 a.m. — as an “active shooter incident,” but later said there was “no longer a need to shelter in place.”

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed to the Daily News that the shooting victim was a woman. The shooting took place in a parking lot on the grounds of the nursing home, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting suspect — who has not been identified — is believed to have left the area, Augusta University wrote in a statement.

The nursing home, which is located near the university’s campus, provides care to veterans of Georgia “who have served in the armed forces during war times,” according to its website.

The facility is operated by the Georgia Department of Veterans Service and Augusta University.
