Video: Leafs’ Komarov elbows Rangers’ McDonagh in head

TORONTO – Almost every Ranger sleepwalked through a putrid first period at Air Canada Centre on Thursday night, with the exception of goalie Antti Raanta, who stood on his head.

But 18:58 into the match, Leafs forward Leo Komarov took several strides to deliver a premeditated left elbow to the head of Ryan McDonagh. This was just the Rangers captain’s second game back from a concussion that had sidelined him for four matches prior.

McDonagh, one of the lone skaters who had played well in the first period, left the game at intermission and did not return. The rest of the Rangers, predictably, woke up.

Komarov’s hit was so dirty that Rangers defenseman Kevin Klein dropped the gloves and fought Komarov with a broken right thumb. Komarov was ejected with a 5-minute match penalty for an illegal check to the head and should expect a call and a significant suspension from the department of player safety.

Derick Brassard then tied the game in the early second period, 1-1, with his second power play goal in as many games, giving the Blueshirts four straight games with at least one power play goal.
