Geoffrey Groselle scored 22 points and continued his torrid shooting pace Thursday, leading Creighton past St. John’s 80-70 in the Big East opener for both teams.
The 7-foot senior center finished 9 of 10 from the field, making his first eight. He had made 16 of his 17 shots from the field over the last two games and entered the game leading the Big East in field goal percentage (73.3).
Maurice Watson Jr. had 17 points and eight assists and Cole Huff added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Bluejays (10-4, 1-0). They have won five and six and got their first road win of the season after losing their first three.
Malik Ellison had 17 points and Durand Johnson added 14 for Led Red Storm (7-7, 0-1), who have lost four straight.
Creighton led 33-29 at halftime and the Bluejays took their biggest lead with an 8-0 run that made it 68-54 with 7:56 to play. Groselle had the first four points of the run with a tip-in and two free throws. Creighton led by 14 points twice more and St. John’s never got closer than 10 points.
Groselle had five rebounds and three blocks for Creighton.
