KANSAS CITY – Edinson Volquez took the mound with a heavy heart Tuesday night, starting Game 1 of the World Series shortly after his father passed away in the Dominican Republic.
According to an Associated Press report, Daniel Volquez, 63, had been dealing with heart disease.
A Royals official said Volquez was not aware of his father’s death when he took the mound, but ESPN Deportes reported that Volquez learned of his father’s death before leaving the house Tuesday afternoon.
“It is unfortunate, on a day filled with happiness something like this happens,” a family source told ESPN Deportes. “But that’s a part of life, and it goes on.”
