Roseanne Barr’s infamous rendition of the national anthem in 1990 hit a high note compared to Fergie’s much-maligned performance of the song last night — according to Barr herself.
“Who saw Fergie’s national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game?” Barr tweeted early Monday morning. “I think mine was better lowkey.”
Barr, 65, was memorably showered with boos as she sang the anthem largely out of tune on July 26, 1990 before a San Diego Padres game at Jack Murphy Stadium. She then grabbed her crotch and spit onto the field as she walked off afterward, stretching out her arms as the crowd continued to boo.
She later told The Washington Post she intended to put forth a good performance of the song, but it got out of hand as the crowd started heckling her.
“I started too high. I knew about six notes in that I couldn’t hit the big note,” Barr told the newspaper in 2015. “So I just tried to get through it.”
Meanwhile, Fergie’s eccentric performance of the anthem Sunday quickly became the subject of jokes and memes on social media.
Warriors star Draymond Green was seen laughing during the TNT broadcast of the anthem, while his teammate Steph Curry “liked” a tweet mocking the performance during halftime.
Fergie has not publicly commented on her performance or the subsequent reactions to it.
Barr went on to retweet a couple of fans who weighed in the matter, including one who praised Barr’s initial post as the “tweet of the week.”
