A major pop star from South Korea has died, and his death is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Jonghyun — a member of the chart-topping South Korean group Shinee — died Monday at 27 inside a hospital shortly after his sister discovered him unconscious inside a rented apartment, according to the Asian country’s news agency outlet Yonhap.
The singer’s sister reportedly called police and said she thought Jonghyun — real name Kim Jong-hyun — was attempting to take his own life.
Authorities also confirmed to the BBC’s Korean Service that they would look into whether his death was the result of a suicide.
Stars gone too soon
Police said Jonghyun sent a text message to his sister featuring the words“final farewell” before his death, according to the Yonhap news agency.
“I’ve had a hard time. Please let me go and say that I did a good job. This is my last word,” the message reportedly read.
Jonghyun was one of five artists in the Shinee boy band, which was founded in 2008. The group maintained considerable popularity both in their native country as well of outside of it, and has churned out multiple number one hits in South Korea.

Jonghyun served as a songwriter for Shinee in addition to being one of its singers.
Shinee performed concerts in Dallas and Los Angeles earlier this year as part of its first North American tour, marking their first shows in the United States.
In addition to his lengthy run with the band, Jonghyun enjoyed success as a solo performer in recent years.
