A top Kansas state lawmaker called a quote from Adolf Hitler “profound” and told her Facebook followers to listen to his words closely.
Republican House Speaker Pro Tem Rep. Peggy Mast praised the Nazi mass murderer in a post on her Facebook page Thursday.
“Great quote from Hitler in the video,” Mast wrote. “Please listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment.”
She later explained that she just wanted to bash Planned Parenthood. The post had been removed from Mast’s page Thursday night after both the pro-choice women’s health group and anti-hate activists condemned the comments.
“Sorry, I’m confused. What video and how is there a great quote from Hitler?” Christie Krieghauser, the chief of staff to Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick, wrote underneath Mast’s original post, according to The Wichita Eagle.
Mast said she had been referring to a video of an anti-abortion activist’s U.S. House Judiciary Committee testimony at a hearing last September.
“Planned Parenthood uses deception, the manipulation of language and slogans, such as ‘a woman’s right to choose,’ to achieve their monetary aims,” Gianna Jessen said during the hearing.
She then read a quote from Hitler to “illustrate how well they employ this technique,” she said.
“The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous,” Hitler said, according to Jessen. “In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.”
Mast shared this post praising Hitler on her Facebook page Thursday.
Mast, who has represented Emporia in the Kansas State Legislature since 1997, attempted to explain her strange post about Hitler with a statement released Thursday night.
“Planned Parenthood uses the same tactics and deception as Hitler regarding the destruction of innocent lives. I was not in any way agreeing with Hitler’s words,” Mast said.
“Rather, I was making a connection between his words and the arguments made by Planned Parenthood. Both are deplorable and heartbreaking.”
The group operates two clinics in the state that perform abortions despite constant criticism by Republican lawmakers.
Adolf Hitler garnered some unusual praise from a Kansas lawmaker.
Planned Parenthood is “a trusted health care provider for thousands of Kansans and we reject and condemn Rep. Peggy Mast’s offensive remarks,” Laura McQuade, the president of Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, told the Eagle.
Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director of an anti-hate group called Kansas Interfaith Action, also slammed Mast’s comments in an interview with the newspaper.
“There’s nothing profound, and there’s no room in American politics for the words or thought of Adolf Hitler,” Rieber said.
