Jeter attends Monday Night Football after missing Winter Meetings

With Giancarlo Stanton out of the Marlins circus, Derek Jeter decided to go Dolphin watching Monday night after skipping the opening day of the Winter Meetings.

The Marlins CEO took in the Dolphins’ win over the Patriots from a suite at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens — 200 miles away from the meetings in Lake Buena Vista.

Jeter has been criticized for not attending the meetings to discuss the Marlins’ new regime and its busy offseason, which entered franchise-shaking territory with the trade of Stanton, the reigning NL MVP, to the Yankees.

The ex-Yankee captain did, however, answer questions via conference call, defending the trade as “the best deal” for the Marlins after it was made official earlier in the day.

Major-league owners don’t generally attend the Winter Meetings, and Jeter, a part owner, said Monday he was never planning to attend. But the opportunity to address the backlash, which includes how he handled the team’s recent employee purge, remains open.
