Inside The Movement Hotel, the former Dutch prison now housing Syrian asylum seekers

After closing its doors in 2016, one of the Netherlands’ most notorious prisons – the Bijlmerbajes – has reopened as a hotel for asylum seekers. All 600 of them, mostly from Syria, work as staffers in the hotel, which still boasts prison cells, barred windows, and a control room filled with surveillance cameras. While the future of the asylum seekers is uncertain, they remain hopeful that citizenship is just around the corner.
