George Clooney says the sexual harassment epidemic stretches far beyond Hollywood — and even his wife Amal, a human rights attorney, has been affected.
“My wife is a very smart, very together, very accomplished human rights lawyer, and she said ‘there have been plenty of times in my life, in the law community I had to tell someone to knock it off.’ So it happens everywhere,” Clooney told “Extra” in a recent interview.
The 56-year-old actor — who has spoken out against his former collaborator Harvey Weinstein amid dozens of sexual misconduct claims against the filmmaker — says he hopes positive changes come now that so many women have come forward with their stories.
“There has to be some good that comes out of all of this and the good is going to have to be that women feel safe to speak up, that they are believed and hopefully be enough that it scares any man who would behave like that from doing it,” Clooney told the TV show.
George Clooney says his wife Amal has dealt with sexual harassment during her career.
His comments come after more than 40 women came forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment or sexual assault, with the allegations spanning decades. Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd are among the women who have claimed Weinstein made unwanted sexual advances toward them early in their careers, and several women, including Rose McGowan, have accused Weinstein of rape.
Clooney and Matt Damon — who worked together on the upcoming film “Suburbicon” — sat down together for an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” where Damon admitted he’d heard about Paltrow’s encounter with Weinstein from Ben Affleck.
“I knew that story. … I never talked to Gwyneth about it,” Damon said. “Ben told me, but I knew that they had come to whatever, you know, agreement or understanding that they had come to, she had handled it.”
Women who have accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault
Paltrow, 45, accused Weinstein of suggesting massages and putting his hands on her after having her come to his hotel suite for a work meeting when she was 22. She is one of many accusers who said Weinstein came on to them inside his hotel room.
Clearly, Clooney takes issue with that.
“Let’s stop having meetings in hotel rooms,” he told “Extra.” “You can have it in the restaurant downstairs.”
