‘Game of Thrones’ fans are adopting, deserting ‘direwolves'

Owning a direwolf isn’t the same as being part of House Stark.

“Game of Thrones” fans have been adopting their own “direwolves,” but too many have found that the breeds are less controllable than they’d like.

An animal shelter in London told the Independent that the number of abandoned huskies and malamutes had doubled between 2010 and 2013.

The number has dropped slightly recently, a trend that the shelter attributed to an education campaign about the dogs and their needs.

According to PETA, two breed-specific rescue groups in California have also seen their numbers double over the last two years.

Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister on the hit HBO series, teamed up with PETA in August to address the same issue.

“Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs,” he said in a statement.
