Eight steps to create New Year’s resolutions you will keep

What are your real intentions for this coming year? A list of New Year resolutions is intentional, but does it have a lasting effect? Goals are great too, but do they read like an unachievable wish list? When you can set firm intentions for what you want to achieve, know what you expect of yourself, and then make an agreement with yourself to stick to it, you are on the road to success. But how do you do that? It is certainly easier to say and write than to do.

The winning formula of following through on your list of intentions is to make them heartfelt. Make them YOUR list and don’t be tempted to live up to someone else’s dreams, demands and expectations. Live your own life in the way you feel is right for you. But even that can be easier to say and write than to do. It can take courage to follow your own truth. Not only to go against what others feel you should be doing, or living up to society’s expectations, but also to believe in yourself, to believe that you can achieve your dreams, to step into your own power and be your own person.

This January, carve out some time for you – time to reflect, think and plan what your intentions are for this coming year. Tune everyone else out and tune into your own inner self to find out what your true passions in life are. Only then will you have the courage to follow through and be motivated to make your intentions a reality.

Clear purpose.

Get in touch with what you love to do – the things that put a smile on your face and brighten your mood. What is it you really want to accomplish? Get intimate with your own thoughts.

Start writing.

Get a journal, and start jotting down your thoughts. Don’t be too concerned about being organized, just get your thoughts down on paper. You can always formulate them in order later.

Get imaginative – dream big!

The only limitations you have in life are those you put on yourself. Everything starts from a thought and the thoughts you allow to take up residence in your mind and heart can shape your life in whatever way you allow them to.

Make an agreement with yourself.

Decide right here and now that you can live your best life; you can be the best person you can be. Make an agreement with yourself to do whatever it takes to live your dream, and live it bold and in full color.

What are your gifts and lessons?

What are you good at, where do you excel? And what do you find difficult and need to work on? Both are necessary in life, because the things you are naturally good at are your gifts, and the things you find difficult are lessons.

Recruit help.

Be accountable for your intentions. Tell someone else, but only if you can totally trust them – otherwise, you are best to be accountable only to yourself. However, often it helps to work with someone and set up a buddy system to keep you on track.

Chunk it down.

Big goals and intentions can be daunting – so much that you can put them aside in fear of failure. Once you set your intentions, chunk them down into smaller more achievable actions points.

Reward yourself.

To stay on track, have a personal cerebration, which will acknowledge that you are moving in the right direction, making headway, and feeling proud of your achievements.

Here are ten steps to help you find your purpose and passion in life, which in turn will set your 2016 intentions:

PASSION – Get passionate about life, what you want and how you’re going to get it.

THINK – Be positive. Think in terms of what you want, and not what you don’t want.

VISUAL – See your intentions materializing – leave nothing out.

FEEL – Get intense. Think with your head but FEEL with your heart.

WRITE – Commit your thoughts to paper. Make it real.

AFFIRM – Don’t take no for an answer. Keep affirming your intentions.

BELIEVE – Believe in yourself and don’t allow negativity from you or anyone else.

ACT – Put action to your thoughts and intentions and follow through.

THANKFUL – Be grateful for everything in life, no matter how small or big.

CREATE – Think in terms of already having created your intentions.

This is your life to live and although we all have responsibilities to other people in life, remember, the first responsibility you have is to yourself. You were born to be great, and this is your year to step into your personal power and be the person you were born to be!
