Every day more and more Americans are receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. That, with the public’s adherence to many of the recommended tools to prevent the spread of the virus—mask wearing, social distancing, practicing hand hygiene, and avoiding crowds included—have caused the number of total infections, hospitalizations, and deaths to decline. However, there is one major thing that could come between this positive trend, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In an interview with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos, he revealed that one attitude could be devastating, reversing the current trajectory of the virus. Dr. Fauci Warns You Don’t Let Down Your Guard

“The numbers are coming down,” Dr. Fauci confirmed. “When you look at the daily curves and the seven day averages, as you’re showing on the screen, there it’s dramatically down with a sharp deflection.”

However, while this is something to celebrate, it doesn’t mean that the pandemic is over, mostly due to one factor. “We’ve gotta be really careful and not just say, ‘Okay, now we’re finished. Now we’re through it.’ We have variants out there that could actually set us back,” he revealed.

The good news? “I mean, fortunately, the vaccines that we are distributing now work well against the UK variant, which looks like it’s becoming more dominant in this country. We have the South African variant. It’s not dominant. It looks like the 117 from the UK is going to take over as the dominant. We do have a good vaccine against that.”

However, we all need to do our part. “Rather than even think about declaring victory and saying, ‘Well, we have herd immunity. We’re in good shape’. We’ve got to keep pushing and pushing because this thing could bounce back with the variance very, very quickly. We cannot declare victory because that curve is coming down so sharply.”
