ALBANY — An upstate GOP congresswoman was criticized Wednesday for suggesting mass murderers tend to be Democrats.
“It’s interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats,” Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-Oneida County) told an Albany radio station. “The media doesn’t talk about that either.”
Tenney’s comments came during a discussion about the gun control debate. She later failed to provide a list of partisan assassins when asked by the Daily News but issued a statement.
“I am fed up with the media and liberals attempting to politicize tragedies and demonize law-abiding gun owners and conservative Americans every time there is a horrible tragedy,” Tenney said.
“While we know the perpetrators of these atrocities have a wide variety of political views, my comments are in response to a question about the failure to prosecute illegal gun crime.”
Evan Lukaske, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, called Tenney “an embarrassment to New York and our country” and said she was unfit to serve in Congress.
“Tenney’s comments are unhinged, shameful and disgusting,” Lukaske said.
Her remarks came on the one-week anniversary of the massacre of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old charged in the mass shootings, posted Instagram pictures of himself wearing one of the red “Make America Great Again” hats produced by Donald Trump’s campaign.
Right-wing groups have frequently circulated lists of high-profile shootings and assassinations they claim were carried out by Democrats. The fact-checking website Snopes.com deemed the lists “mostly false.”
