Bronx city councilman probed for creepy conduct with staffer

City Councilman Andy King subjected a female Council staffer to “unwelcome attention,” including gripping her hand to force her to smile and asking to see her in a “beautiful gown,” according to details of a complaint released Wednesday.

The Council’s ethics committee publicly identified King for the first time as the target of its probe, which began in December.

The Bronx Democrat is accused of violating a Council rule prohibiting disorderly behavior, which includes sexual harassment.

A Council staffer charged King “paid unwelcome attention to her, that Council member King repeatedly asked the employee to smile more while shaking her hand and keeping an extended grip on her hand until she smiled,” Standards and Ethics Committee chair Steve Matteo said after the panel met behind closed doors to discuss the charges.

The Bronx pol also “asked the employee for a personal phone number in connection with the Council member inviting her to a winter ball fund-raising gala, and stating that he would like to see her in a beautiful gown at the event,” he said.

The committee voted unanimously in December to open an investigation, and was briefed Wednesday after a preliminary inquiry by committee staff. They plan to hold another meeting to continue the probe.

King did not respond to a call for comment.

The Councilman has been accused of sexual harassment before, in a notice of claim filed by a different staffer who charged he made sexist remarks and unwelcome advances and got her fired after she refused him.

If the committee finds he broke the rule, he could face penalties ranging from a reprimand or fine to expulsion.
