Elias, 57, an author, songwriter and a maker of short films, was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer in 2016.

That year Gilbert split from her husband of 12 years, Jose Nunes, who was portrayed by Javier Bardem in the 2010 film adaptation of “Eat Pray Love” starring Julia Roberts.

Two months later, Gilbert announced that she’d found love again with Elias, her best friend.

In her 2013 memoir, “Harley Loco: A Memoir of Hard Living, Hair and Post-Punk,” Elias recalled her highs and lows, including homelessness and drug addiction.

Gilbert’s Instagram tribute continued: “I loved you so much, Rayya. Thank you for letting me walk with you right to the edge of the river. It has been the greatest honor of my life.”
