American Girl’s 2018 'Girl of the Year' is an astronaut

American Girl’s 2018 “Girl of the Year” really reaches for the stars.

The limited edition figurine is an 11-year-old aspiring astronaut who dreams of being the first person to go to Mars. She’s also a powerful example for girls considering studies show that females lose interest in fields like science and technology in their teens.

Named Luciana Vega, she’ll be available to buy starting Monday.

“Luciana is a role model for today’s girls — empowering them to defy stereotypes, and embrace risks that will teach them about failure and success as they chart their own course in life,” Katy Dickson, president of American Girl, said in a statement. “For us, it’s all about building girls of strong character, and it’s why we’re continuing to encourage girls to lead change.”

A survey commissioned by Microsoft out earlier this year found that girls in Europe become interested in STEM subjects — science, technology, engineering and math — around age 11 but then lose interest when they’re 15.

Martin Bauer, a psychology professor at the London School of Economics, who worked on the survey of 11,500 girls in 12 European countries, attributed this drop to conformity to social expectations, gender stereotypes, and a lack of role models.

The 18-inch doll, a brunette with brown eyes who’s of Chilean descent, of course will have her own line of space-inspired products, including a Flight Suit, Space Suit, Maker Station, and Mars Habitat complete with plenty of science gadgets. She’ll also have her own book series.

There’s no word yet on how much Luciana will set parents back, but the pricey dolls usually go for between $ 60 and $ 115 — and that doesn’t include accessories.

American Girl’s “Girl of the Year” dolls launched in 2001, and are only available the year they debut. Last year, a doll called Gabriela McBride — a dancer, artist and poet — became the first African-American “Girl of the Year.”
