Alex Rodriguez didn’t exactly hit it out of the park on his first date with Jennifer Lopez.
In fact, the former Yankee didn’t even know they were on a date.
“Maybe we were seeing each other at night because of her work schedule. I went in uneasy, not knowing her situation,” he told Vanity Fair in a wide-ranging interview with his superstar girlfriend. “It would be incredibly productive for me to sit with one of the smartest, greatest women in the world, especially for a guy like me who is coming through tough times.”
And so when Lopez informed him “around the third or fourth inning” of their dinner that she was single, Rodriguez did as any love-struck Romeo would do — he retreated to the restroom to “re-adjust” his thoughts.
Alex Rodriguez texted Jennifer Lopez “You look sexy AF” from the bathroom on their first date.

“I went to the bathroom and got enough courage to send her a text,” he recalled.
The text in question?
“It says, ‘You look sexy AF,’ ” Lopez chimed in, before adding that right after he sent the message, the fire alarm went off and they were forced to evacuate.
Awkward first date aside, the power couple has been going strong since making their public debut at the Met Gala in May — so well, fans would never know it all started with a tap.
Lopez, 48, told Vanity Fair she was eating lunch in Beverly Hills last winter when she saw Rodriguez, 42, walk by and felt “compelled” to do something she normally wouldn’t.
Because she was too shy to call his name, the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer — still dressed in full costume from her TV series “Shades of Blue” — tapped the ballplayer on the shoulder and said hello.
The women of Alex Rodriguez
Rodriguez responded, “You look so beautiful,” which charmed Lopez enough to arrange a dinner a few nights later.
“We are very much twins,” Lopez told Vanity Fair about her beau. “We’re both Leos; we’re both from New York; we’re both Latino and about 20 other things … I understand him in a way that I don’t think anyone else could, and he understands me in a way that no one else ever could.”
Rodriguez previously gushed about Lopez to Us Weekly, and praised her as a role model to his two daughters, Natasha, 12, and Ella, 9.
“I’m in a good relationship,” he said. “I feel like I can say that for the first time — I don’t know — maybe ever … We complement each other, and there’s really pure, true love.”
