NBC may not be looking very far for Matt Lauer’s “Today” show replacement.
“The rumor around the ‘Today’ show offices is that Willie Geist could be the one to replace Matt,” a source told ET.
Geist, 42, spent five years as a co-anchor on the “Today” show’s third hour, while serving as a contributor to the program’s earlier hours. He also filled in for Lauer on occasion on the show, before sliding over to the Sunday version of the morning show, “Sunday Today,” last year.
He’s been with NBC in some capacity since 2005.
It’s unlikely that Megyn Kelly, another member of the “Today” show team, will fill Lauer’s vacated seat, however. Kelly joined NBC earlier this year and began hosting the show’s third hour, “Megyn Kelly Today,” in September.
Stars accused of sexual harassment and assault
“The network likes Megyn in her current role,” a source told the outlet.
Lauer, 59, was fired by NBC on Wednesday after a co-worker filed a complaint accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Multiple additional women have since come forward with allegations of misconduct against Lauer.
Lauer refuted some of the allegations against him but expressed regret for his past behavior in a statement Thursday.
“Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” Lauer said.
