President-elect Donald Trump claimed that he settled the Trump University fraud case because the U.S. is now his No. 1 priority — as he insisted that he could have won.
“The ONLY bad thing about winning the Presidency is that I did not have the time to go through a long but winning trial on Trump U. Too bad!” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.
On Friday, Trump agreed to pay $ 25 million in order to settle two cases brought against his now defunct for-profit Trump University.
“I settled the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of the potential award because as President I have to focus on our country,” Trump tweeted.
The suits — filed in New York and California — alleged that the school was a scam that did not provide them with the real estate expertise it promised.
Trump tweeted Saturday that he settled the suit so he could “focus” on the country.
Trump University touted itself as a prestigious academy staffed by instructors hand-selected by the real estate mogul himself. Instead, students were pressured into taking more expensive classes by teachers not verified by Trump.
The settlement saves Trump — who has frequently boasted about how he does not settle lawsuits — the embarrassment of having to testify in court. The first trial, for a class action suit in California, was slated to start just after Thanksgiving.
The story of Trump’s settlement made the front page of Saturday’s Daily News.

Of the $ 25 million settlement sum, $ 21 million will go to victims in two California class action suits. New York will get $ 3 million for victims not covered in the California lawsuits.
Trump will also pay a $ 1 million penalty for violating New York education laws that forbid unlicensed universities, sources said.
