A 4-year-old Texas girl was shot and killed by a robber trying to grab her mother’s purse.

Ava Castillo, her mother Diana and her 10-year-old sister Betsy were all shot by an unidentified assailant while they were carrying groceries into their Houston apartment Monday night.

Police say that at least two attackers tried to steal the 27-year-old mother’s purse, and that nine shots were fired after she refused.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle that Gomez went into “mother mode” trying to protect her children and did not realize she had been hit until an officer noticed blood on her shirt.

Gomez’s younger daughter died Tuesday, with her sister released and her mother awakening to learn that Ava had died.

“She has a breathing tube so she couldn’t speak. She just cried,” Gomez’s sister Julie told KPRC.

Police arrested a person of interest in the case on Tuesday.

Sources told the station that a person of interest in the case was arrested with a semi-automatic gun at a local motel Tuesday morning for an unrelated offense.
