Over the course of 300 episodes, any show is going to go off the ledge at some point.
“Grey’s Anatomy” has had more than its fair share of bizarre plots to go along with some of the most heartbreaking storylines on TV.
In honor of the medical drama’s 300th episode, we take a look at 10 of the craziest plots:
Izzie’s brain tumor
On most shows, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) cutting a patient’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) LVAD wire, after which he has a stroke and dies, then she inherits $ 8.7 million from him and opens a free clinic, would be the wildest aspect. But no. “Grey’s Anatomy” went a step further and brought back Denny as a ghost, whose presence eventually signified her brain tumor.
George O’Malley’s death was one of the first cruel moments.
George is 007
When George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) left Seattle, he wasn’t allowed to just join the Army. Instead, he was hit by a bus trying to save a woman, rendered unrecognizable by the accident and then died in the hospital minutes after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was finally able to identify him.
Jo has a husband
Jo Wilson’s (Camilla Luddington) reluctance to marry Alex (Justin Chambers) wasn’t some old-fashioned cold feet, but rather a secret husband who used to beat her.
Neither Meredith nor viewers could handle the fatal plane crash.
The plane crash
In one fell swoop, showrunner Shonda Rhimes dealt one of the heaviest blows to the show’s cast, killing off Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and maiming Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).
The hospital shooting
When a disgruntled patient (Michael O’Neill) can’t find peace after his wife’s death, he instead decides to take more lives and shoots up Seattle Grace, killing Reed (Nora Zehetner) and Percy (Robert Baker) and shooting Derek and Alex.
Even worse: the follow-up episode killed off Mandy Moore too.
Nobody in Seattle knew about Addison.
Addison shows up
Surprise! Not only was Meredith’s new boyfriend married, but she was also a legendary neonatal surgeon come to get her husband back.
Also she cheated on Derek with his best friend.
Any good soap opera has secret siblings. Meredith Grey got two.
The second, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) showed up to replace Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) as the head of cardiothoracic surgery. Meredith doesn’t know she exists — and nor does her dad (James Pickens, Jr.).
Meredith barely escaped a bomb threat that she put herself in the middle of.
Meredith puts her hand in a bomb
Meredith’s semi-suicidal tendencies weren’t news by the second season, but putting her hand in a live bomb with a trained bomb technician (Kyle Chandler) right there was one of her not-so-great ideas.
Derek’s car crash
It was almost a surprise that McDreamy lasted as long as he did, given his public problems with Rhimes, but no one lives forever. Not on “Grey’s Anatomy,” at least.
He finally met his maker in a car crash after the Dillard Medical Center doctors failed to order a head CT.
That musical episode
Rhimes has never been scared to get adventurous, but the seventh season episode “Song Beneath the Song” took on an impressive level of creative.
While Callie (Sara Ramirez) fights for the life of her and her baby after a car crash, the rest of the cast fills in the time during surgery for a bevy of songs from Snow Patrol, Anna Nalick, KT Tunstall, The Fray and Brandi Carlisle.
You know, a normal day at Seattle Grace.
