Sonny Gray again gets no run support as Yankees lose to Rays, 2-1

Sonny Gray pitched well, but got no run support.

What else is new?

Gray surrendered a solo homer to Adeiny Hechavarria on a 93-mph fastball with one out in the eighth inning, and the Yankees’ three-game winning streak ended with a 2-1 loss to the Rays on Tuesday night at Citi Field. The Yankees now trail the Red Sox by 4 games in the AL East after Boston’s 11-1 win over the Athletics.

The Bombers, who had averaged 7.2 runs in their previous nine games, were held to just three hits by Blake Snell and four relievers. They didn’t get a runner past first base in the final eight innings.

Aaron Judge struck out three times and walked once. Matt Holliday gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI double that scored Judge in the first.

In eight starts with the Yankees, Gray is 3-5 with a 2.66 ERA. In his first game back from the disabled list, Clint Frazier drove a ball to deep right in the fifth but Steven Souza was able to haul it down.
