This is f—ing genius!
A new study reveals that people who curse a lot are also more articulate.
“It is a common assumption that people who swear frequently are lazy (or) do not have an adequate vocabulary,” psychologists Kristin Jay and Timothy Jay wrote in the Language Sciences journal.
But the study showed that knowing more curse words translated into a larger vocabulary overall.
“Speakers who use taboo words understand their general expressive content as well as nuanced distinctions,” the Jays concluded. “The ability to make nuanced distinctions indicates the presence of more linguistic knowledge.”
In the study, the researchers asked participants to spit out as many obscenities as they could think of in 60 seconds.
The subjects were then asked to name as many animals as they could think of in the same time frame — and the ones who dropped the most four-letter words were also more likely to come up with the most creatures.
So curse away. It may be helping your vocabulary.
Well we’ll be damned.
