When the bus carrying the 2015 National League champions rolled into the Citi Field parking lot at 3:27 p.m. Thursday, the Flushing faithful were waiting for them.

Speaking to reporters and the several dozen fans that trekked to Citi Field to welcome home the Mets after they clinched a World Series berth in Chicago, David Wright expressed appreciation for all those New Yorkers who stood by the club through all those losing seasons since their last postseason appearance in 2006.

“I’m real proud of these guys behind me,” the Mets captain said. “We’re excited for this city, this fan base, this organization. We’ve all waited a long time for this and it has finally come to fruition. It’s well worth the wait. Worth everything we’ve been through these last nine years. It’s an incredible feeling. These guys deserve so much credit. This organization, this fan base, for sticking with us. I’m glad we were able to deliver for them. It’s just an incredible feeling.”

Then someone asked “Jays or Royals?”

Without hesitating, Wright said “Mets!”

Mary Clewell of the Bronx and her sister, JoAnn, were among the 50 or so diehards assembled outside the players’ parking lot as the team returned to New York after a four-game sweep of the Cubs. The stadium gift shop was doing brisk business selling “The Pennant Will Rise” T-shirts, a full eight days before the first ever World Series game at Citi Field.

“When you’re a true Mets fan you live through all the agony just waiting for a day like this,” Clewell said. “I love my boys.”

Ballpark characters Signguy, Cowbellman and Pinman were all on hand, leading rounds of “Meet the Mets.”

“I want pictures, autographs, a kiss maybe,” said Nayeli Martinez of Corona, who brought her 3-year-old son, Christopher, wearing a Wright jersey. “We’ve been watching them all summer.”

One fan in attendance, Fernando Pacheco of Queens, had been at Citi Field the previous night, watching Game 4 at McFadden’s, getting only a few hours of sleep before heading to work and then straight back to the stadium.

“I just want to thank them,” said Pacheco, who served in the military and said he admires the team’s “never-quit attitude.”

“Just keep on going, that’s what it’s all about,” he said.

I’m really hoping the Mets win Wednesday, for obvious reasons and not so obvious reasons. The obvious reasons: I want this series over as soon as possible. Don’t want to have to play another game at Wrigley and face the prospect of facing Arriet…
