If Lily Tomlin (left) and Jane Wagner do decide to get married, don’t expect a traditional ceremony. ‘No rings, no bridal dresses,’ Tomlin said. ‘Maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens.’

It’s never too late for love.

Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner are proof of that. After 42 years together and the legalization of same-sex marriage in some states, the couple is now seriously toying with the idea of matrimony.

“We’re thinking maybe we’ll get married,” the 73-year-old actress told E! News.

They met in 1971 when the “9 to 5” actress approached Wagner, 78, about a collaboration on her comedy album. Tomlin had previously recognized Wagner’s work as a writer after seeing an after-school special she wrote.

“Frankly, I was pretty taken with her as soon as I saw her,” Tomlin told Metro Weekly in 2006. “We just sort of clicked. We became a couple right away.”

Now, after the Supreme Court’s rulings on DOMA and Prop 8, the ladies can see themselves saying “I do,” although there would be nothing traditional about their ceremony.

“No rings, no bridal dresses,” Tomlin quipped. “Maybe we’ll be dressed like chickens.”

Whatever attire they choose, the happy couple will take their relationship where they never imaged it could go.

“You didn’t think that would happen,” the actress said of same-sex marriage becoming legal. “It’s pretty remarkable.”

Despite the notable progress same-sex marriage has made in this country, Tomlin and Wagner have been exceptionally happy together over the years.

“You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice,” she added. “Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very, very happy about it.”

Marriage or not, Tomlin and Wagner have a connection that few can find and fewer can hold on to.

“I know what a good heart she has, and how empathetic she is with all kinds of people and issues,” Tomlin boasted about her longtime partner. “She’s so brilliant on top of it that she can voice these things. And she’s as funny as she can possibly be. She makes me laugh.”
