An Australian soap opera star has been taken off life support a little over two weeks after she suffered devastating injuries in a car accident that killed four others.
Jessica Falkholt, an actress on the popular series “Home and Away,” has been in a coma since the Dec. 26 crash, according to Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
Doctors have performed multiple surgeries on the 29-year-old Falkholt — including reportedly removing a portion of her skull and one of her kidneys — in an effort to save her life.
Her parents and younger sister — whom Falkholt was in the car with — each died as a result of the accident, as did the other car’s driver, Craig Whitall.
Falkholt’s parents, Lars and Vivian, both died in the accident, while the actress and her sister, Annabelle, were found unconscious. Annabelle, 21, died three days later in the hospital.
A funeral service for Lars, Vivian and Anabelle took place in Sydney on Wednesday.
Falkholt portrayed Hope Morrison on “Home and Away” for a few months two years ago, in addition to appearing on several other shows. The soap opera shared a tribute to Falkholt on Thursday.
“Rest in peace, beautiful Jessica Falkholt,” a tweet on the “Home and Away” Twitter page reads.
Paul Ponticello, the brother of Vivian, said he “always thought we would grow old together,” according to The Daily Telegraph.
“They are together and always will be,” he said.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash. Whitall had a history of traffic offenses and spent time behind bars for driving while disqualified, according to the Australian newspaper.
