Coming out of the ‘80s vault next is “Heathers,” with TV Land ordering a comedic anthology development based on the movie, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The dark comedy will keep its gloomy tone but take place in present day with a new set of evil chicks, still known as the Heathers.
In this take of the 1988 film, Veronica Sawyer (then played by Winona Ryder) will still deal with her murderous boyfriend and the outcasts who are now high school royalty, the website said.
Actress Lisanna Falk’s character of Heather McNamara has been rewritten as a black lesbian while Shannen Doherty’s character of Heather Duke will be a male who identifies as gender-queer and whose real name is Heath.
Lastly, rounding out the trio is Heather Chandler — then played by Kim Walker — who “has a body like Martha Dumptruck.”
Similar to the anthology format of hits like “Fargo” and “American Horror Story,” the series plans to feature a new group of Heathers each season.
The project is the third reboot for the cult classic, which starred Ryder and Christian Slater as a morbid couple.
The Bravo network tried to continue the story in 2012 by focusing on the daughters of the mean girls but the idea was scrapped the next year.
The single-camera reboot was written by Jason Micallef (“Butter”) and Tom Resenberg and Gary Lucchesi serve as executive producers.
