Democrat Justin Brannan, who once played guitar in hardcore bands Indecision and Most Precious Blood, won a New York City Council seat Tuesday.
The former headbanger will represent the 43rd District, which includes his native Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.
In an interview with rock blog CLRVYNT, Brannan said his time in the DIY music scene influenced his decision to get involved with politics.
“If the mainstream wouldn’t accept me, I just started my own stream,” Brannan said. “I think eventually there comes a time in your life when you realize that we are the people we’ve been waiting for. And if you wanna make change, you’ve gotta get out there and make it happen yourself.”
Brannan wasn’t the only member of the hardcore music scene to win elected office on Tuesday.
