Diddy offers to buy NFL in Twitter rant defending player protests

Hip hop mogul Diddy has a Hail Mary proposal for the NFL — sell him the entire league.

The rapper and entrepreneur weighed in in the ongoing NFL player protests by saying players would be able to express their beliefs without issue if he ran the show.

“I did have a dream to own a NFL team but now my dream is to own our own league!” Diddy began in a series of tweets Tuesday evening.

“A league where you can be yourself. Have a retirement plan,” he continued. “Have freedom to be a great human and protest for your people without being demonized for your beliefs as a KING!! NEW DREAM ALERT!!!!”

He concluded his pitch with a final declaration: “SELL ME THE NFL NOW!!!!”

The NFL has continued to make headlines the past two seasons due to players kneeling — among other forms of demonstration — during the national anthem as a form of peaceful protest. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began the protests last season when he kneeled during “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a way of responding to the oppression of people of color in America.

Buffalo Bills players take a knee during the playing of the national anthem prior to an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 24, 2017. The symbolic kneel comes two days after Trump's harsh comments on players who don't stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner." NFL player Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem last year as a way to peacefully protest police brutality against African Americans in America.

Of course, despite his zealousness for giving the league a makeover, Diddy would never be able to purchase the entire NFL. For one, that’s not how the league works — a different owner or group owns each of the 32 teams and vote to elect the leagues commissioner.

An NFL team, on average, costs about $ 1 billion to purchase, with the Dallas Cowboys being the highest-valued at $ 4.2 billion.

Diddy’s net worth is $ 820 million, according to Forbes.

Last month, President Trump said during a rally in Alabama that any player who disrespects the flag should be “fired” by his team. Many additional players took part in the protest on the first Sunday after Trump’s remarks.

Then this week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sparked controversy when he said he’d bench any of his players who disrespect the flag.
